MOSAIC Update
The often-talked-about but elusive MOSAIC rule change may finally come to fruition this year… and I know—you’ve heard that before.
During this year’s Sun 'n Fun, a panel consisting of industry leaders and an FAA representative fielded questions about MOSAIC. The hottest question, of course, was when it will finally take effect. There’s good news on that front—as well as some slightly bad news. Early indications are that MOSAIC will roll out in two phases.
The first phase—the good news—will allow currently certified, N-registered aircraft that meet the new MOSAIC standards for light sport to be flown by individuals holding a Sport Pilot Certificate. For instance, currently flying and registered Cessna 172s (and other aircraft that meet MOSAIC standards) will likely be flyable by sport pilots. The hope is that this will take effect around August 2025, which means we might see an announcement at this year’s AirVenture.
The second phase—the bad news—is that new aircraft models, including all those fancy sport planes currently flying in Europe under their sport rules, will come sometime in the future. There’s no clear timeline yet for when this part of MOSAIC will take effect.
As is tradition, all of this is subject to change and based mostly on speculation.
