Safety: Do the Right Thing

Just as the pilots in your flying club must regularly update and polish their skills, the Air Safety Institute (ASI) is regularly updating its content to ensure pilots are receiving the most up-to-date information while leveraging the latest technology.

For example, ASI’s popular online course, Do the Right Thing: Decision Making for Pilots, was recently updated with new information as well as a new mobile-friendly format. If you’ve ever tried to view ASI courses on your iPad you may already know that some of them are not yet iPad-compatible.  But the new tablet-friendly course eliminates that issue. It is optimized for iPad viewing, so you can now view it conveniently from wherever you are – just use your tablet to log in, and let the learning begin.

Good decision making requires anticipation, recognition, and timely action to correct a problem. Easier said than done? The Do the Right Thing: Decision Making for Pilots course can help. Discover best practices used in decision-making. Also learn how to develop your own set of personal minimums.

The course is ideal for flying club safety meetings because it offers scenarios that the group can go through together, with discussion points along the way. With three scenarios for VFR pilots and two for IFR pilots, the course offers something for each member of your club. The scenarios ask participants to make decisions at certain points along each flight and the outcome is determined by the decisions made – just like in a real flying scenario. But the course allows you to practice those decision making skills while safely on the ground. The course goes through typical scenarios that have proven to be especially hazardous to pilots, including VFR into IMC, fuel management, weight and balance, flight planning, and icing conditions.

So at your next flying club safety meeting, get all members engaged in practicing decision making skills that may one day save their lives, with ASI’s online course, Do the Right Thing: Decision Making for Pilots.

Safe pilots are always learning, and the Air Safety Institute’s goal is to ensure pilots have a wealth of information to keep flying safely. Our educational programs are funded through donations from pilots dedicated to forwarding that mission. Show your support by donating to the AOPA Foundation today (www.aopafoundation.org/donate).
