The AOPA Air Safety Institute helps pilots do just that by re-creating accidents in its popular video series, Accident Case Studies. And now ASI brings case studies on the road for an in-person seminar series titled Non-towered Case Studies: What Went Wrong?
Whether or not there is a tower at your flying club’s home airport, a refresher about non-towered operations is useful for every pilot. Flying at non-towered fields is a balancing act. Especially on busy days, they demand concentration, communication, sharp eyes, solid stick-and-rudder skills, and the ability to improvise at a moment’s notice. Sometimes the margin for error can be very slim.
ASI’s new seminar turns a spotlight on real-life accidents in the non-towered environment. Together with ASI’s expert presenters, seminar attendees will play the role of accident investigator – starting at the crash scene and working backwards through physical evidence, eyewitness testimony, and other leads to figure out what went wrong, and why.
The case studies include both fatal and non-fatal accidents, and offer a variety of causes, types of aircraft, and regions. Audience interaction is encouraged during the one and a half hour presentation, and you can receive Wings credit for attending. The best part is the opportunity to enjoy quality time learning with your flying club members, so consider attending together in lieu of a regular safety meeting.
