CFI renewal, with options

As an active pilot and flying club member, you are most likely familiar with the online courses produced by the Air Safety Institute (ASI). They provide detailed information on a variety of aviation safety topics, and by completing a course you earn credit for the FAA Wings program, and Accident Forgiveness from many insurance companies.  But did you know that if you’re a flight instructor, there’s another very important benefit—credit towards your CFI certificate renewal?

Have you taken any of the following ASI courses in the two years prior to your CFI expiration date?

  • Mountain Flying
  • Public Benefit Flying: Balancing Safety and Compassion
  • IFR Insights: Cockpit Weather

If so, you have already completed up to 3 modules of the 16-hour online Flight Instructor Refresher Course (eFIRC) provided by ASI. Only ASI’s eFIRC gives you a choice of electives for CFI renewal—and more electives will be added regularly so every two years you will see new content and have more choices.

There are many other benefits of eFIRC—convenience, outstanding content, and stellar customer service. But don’t take our word for it, read on for just a few of the many positive comments we’ve received from CFIs who have participated in eFIRC.

Convenience. “I found the training to be exemplary. Completed on my own pace, I was able to focus on the areas that needed more emphasis. I wholeheartedly recommend this course for CFI renewal,” wrote Capt. Rodney Ennis.  Not only can you view the eFIRC on your tablet, but you can complete it within a 2-year timeframe. Take advantage of downtime between flights, or when the weather isn’t conducive to flying, to complete a module.  “This is probably the easiest and most convenient way I have renewed my certificate,” wrote Jim Gross.

Content. The content is updated on a regular basis, and you also will receive additional content on a thumb drive pre-loaded with the Federal Aviation Regulations, Aeronautical Information Manual, FAA handbooks, relevant Advisory Circulars, and much more. “Very good presentation of the material with excellent videos and examples as well as professional quality presentations and presenters,” wrote Tim Schryer.

Customer Service. “Kristine Hartzell was very thorough in covering any answers to questions I had and quick to respond. She made my whole learning experience that much better,” wrote Christopher Africa. Hartzell, Air Safety Institute’s Chief Flight Instructor, along with AOPA’s Pilot Information Center, provide outstanding customer service to all eFIRC participants.

As a flying club member and flight instructor, safety is clearly a priority for you. Participating in ASI’s eFIRC provides revenue that ASI uses to produce additional safety education programs. Thank you for supporting what we do and if you haven’t already, please take a look at ASI’s eFIRC the next time you renew your CFI certificate. As Guy Dayhoff wrote, “It is the best program out there hands down.”

The Air Safety Institute is a division of the non-profit AOPA Foundation. Funding for ASI safety programs comes from the generosity of pilots like you. (www.aopafoundation.org/donate)
