AOPA Indy Fly-in Features Discussions about 3rd Class Medicals, How to Start a Club

Indiana Flying Club seminarAOPA’s second regional fly-in was a huge success in Indianapolis, Indiana. Flying club members flew in from all over the midwest for food and fun.  Pilots filled each of the seminar tents, looking for a variety of information.

The flying club tent was busy most of the day. Of course, everyone did leave for a bit to hear Mark Baker speak at the Pilot Town Hall Meeting. Discussion about the third class medical exemption was a popular topic. This is big news for many flying clubs; some may be trying to decide if it is beneficial to purchase an LSA. Many of our members are either turning to light sport or waiting to see what happens with the third class medical exemption. This could shape the direction many of our clubs take with new purchases.

Marc Epner shared his flying club wisdom to a full house at the Flying Club Seminar. He spoke about his experience starting a club and as a club officer. Marc is a strong believer in having a vision and following it. His group decided what they wanted their club, Leading Edge Flying Club, to look like, then built the club to match that model. He spoke of culture and safety, and how to imbed those ideals in your club. We will have the opportunity to hear more from Marc at Air Venture this summer!

AOPA’s next fly-in is in Plymouth, Massachusetts on July 12. Plan to spend your day with other flying club members enjoying friends, food and flying! Don’t forget to join us for lunch at the flying clubs table!
